At the meeting Isabel Lopes, President Elect of RC Tavira gave us a presentation on a project she is involved with in Sao Tome and Principe providing assistance to mothers and babies as the infant mortality rate  and death rate for young  mothers (12-15 years old)  is very high.  Delivery kits are provided to improve sanitation when babies are born.

Isabel is asking for help from all Clubs in District 1960  to purchase these kits and our Club is delighted to help in this worthwhile project with a donation of  500 euros.  RCEPI already have an involvement in Sao Tome with a micro-financing project to  help a women´s cooperative there expand their business.

São Lourenço Choir 15th April 2016

São Louenço Singers

The São Louenço Choir was formed  in January 2013.  Numbers vary but currently the choir has around  40 members from different nationalities with a mix of sopranos, altos and baritones under the musical direction of Joyce Whitelaw. Their diverse repertoire ranges from jazz/swing through to classical.  The choir is based in the São Lourenço Cultural Centre.

Agnete Sylvan of the Rotary Club of Estoi Palace International is a choir member and she organised a fund raising musical extravaganza at the Lethes Theatre in Faro on behalf of Estoi Rotary on the 15th of April.  The choir treated a full house of over 230 people to a selection of songs from Broadway musicals, through the decades, including West Side Story,  My Fair Lady and many, many more songs.  Over 2800 Euros was raised for the Algarve Oncology Association and other Rotarian charities.

Rotary Club Estoi Palace Fellowship visit to Dias de Aromas. April 2015

DiasDeAromas.jpgOn 21st April a number of RCEPI Rotarians and spouses enjoyed a wonderful day in the Barrocal, close to Sao Bras do Alportel. The visit was to tour the Dias de Aromas herb farm. The project was born of the ideas of two young men who believe in the operation of the ecosystem in a balanced and in sustainable management of the environment and landscape.

The company is headquartered in São Brás de Alportel and began operating in 2013. It is dedicated to the production of medicinal plants and herbs, with its agricultural operations in the Cerro Monteiro – (Murta). Its secluded location is in perfect harmony with nature and preserves some native species of Algarve herbs, which are hard to find elsewhere.

Dias de Aromas seeks to take advantage of the wonderful climate of the Algarve Barrocal, focusing on species from warm climates such as the Cayenne Chilli promoting local aromatic plants such as Catmint or "Herb of Olives" and the Cabeçudo thyme species (thymus lotocephalus).

After touring the various varieties growing on the hillside, an excellent lunch typical of the region was prepared and served by the staff. A great day was had by all and thanks go to Rtn Bruno Costa for organising the visit as well as to the staff of Aromas de Dias.
