August 2011

Rotary Club Estoi Palace International is holding a charity golf day on August 27th 2011 at the Algarve’s Quinta do Vale course. This Seve Ballesteros signature course is on the banks of the Guadiana River which forms the border between Portugal and Spain.

The event will raise funds in support of Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign.

Since 1988, Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention have worked towards Polio’s worldwide eradication. Rotary began arranging immunisation of children against polio in 1985 and became a spearheading partner in the GPEI three years later.

Thanks to Rotary and its partners, the world has seen polio cases plummet by 99 per cent, preventing five million instances of child paralysis and 250,000 deaths. When Rotary began its eradication work, polio infected more than 350,000 children annually. In 2009, fewer than 1,700 cases were reported worldwide.

Rotary is determined to finish the job and finally eliminate polio but the cases represented by that final 1 per cent are the most difficult and expensive to prevent. Challenges include geographic isolation, armed conflict, and cultural barriers.

That’s why it’s so important to generate the funding needed to End Polio Now. To fail is to invite a polio resurgence that would potentially condemn millions of children to lifelong paralysis in the years ahead.

The bottom line is that as long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children, wherever they live, remain at risk.

Rotary Club Estoi Palace International is already rising to the challenge with members having individually contributed to End Polio Now. We are now reaching out to the local community and others to help in this important programme.

The golf event will be an 18 holes Stableford competition with lunch and Polo shirt for a fee of €50 per person. There will be some excellent prizes including a fantastic team prize and individual first prizes for men and women along with longest drive and nearest pin competitions. It is also planned to have a hole in one car prize!

Groups of four will tee off and if needed we can arrange for groups to be formed. Total numbers will be necessarily limited to 20 teams.

A shotgun start will be at 9.00am and the play will be followed by lunch and prize presentation including a winner’s trophy sponsored by Imperius Asset Management, our main sponsor for the event. Further sponsorship is being provided by Premier FX, Vila Gale Hotels, Wellness Longevity, Pestana Vila Sol and others.

There are also plans for a separate programme for wives / husbands / partners probably to Ayamonte followed by a lunch in Vila Real de San Antonio before returning to Quinta do Vale for the presentations.

All support will be fully acknowledged publicly and we will be arranging extensive media coverage of the event.

For more information, or to register to play, please contact club member Barry Dawson at barry@rotaryestoipalace.org or 91324 4149.
